How to Make Your WordPress or Blogger Blog DoFollow

What does becoming DoFollow mean? It simply means that you are allowing each commenter’s links in your comments section to be nofollow free. It is like a reward to the people who take the time to leave a comment on your website, allowing their links to be fully useful when search engines crawl your post.

So how do you make your blog DoFollow?

Self-Hosted WordPress Blogs

For self-hosted WordPress users, it is pretty easy. Simply go to your Dashboard > Plugins > Add New and search for DoFollow. You should receive a list of current DoFollow plugins that you can simply install and activate. Once activated, these plugins automatically make all of the commenters’ links (past and future) DoFollow.

Blogger / Blogspot Blogs

For Blogger / Blogspot blogs, you will need to do a few things. First, under settings, allow Anonymous users to comment. This is the only way your commenters will have the Name / URL option. Then, go to your Layout tab > Edit HTML. From here, you will need to Download Full Template, which will be an XML file.

Open the XML file in a text editor. Just in case there are any problems, first save a backup copy of your template. Then do a search for nofollow. You will find two lines that will simply need the rel=’nofollow’ removed from the code – one for the commenter’s URL, and one for backlinks.

<a expr:href='data:comment.authorUrl' rel='nofollow'><data:comment.author/></a>

<a expr:href='data:backlink.url' rel='nofollow'><data:backlink.title/></a>

Save your template xml, and then upload it. Now your Blogger / Blogspot should be free of nofollow links.

Very nice tips for bloggers, I have just did that to one of my Famous Bloggers Club blog!

I believe this is a good way to enhance the loyalty of readers and visitors of my blog, but of course there is one main problem, Spammers!

So if anyone decide to follow the DoFollow movement shoudl put more attention to Spammers who will comment to get your PR fuel!

  2. I much prefer DoFollow, because I think the whole concept of NoFollow is half-baked. However, a little test I conducted shows that there might not be as much a difference as most people think between NoFollow and DoFollow. See the post that CommentLuv adds to my comment for the details.

By the way, the WordPress plugin I’m using is the one called “nofollow case by case”, it will enable dofollow on both comment name and commentluv links in comments. If you don’t want a “do follow” on certain “name links” in comments, you just add “/dontfollow” to the end of the URL, which then automatically converts to rel=”nofollow” on the page.

    @Lisa Riversa,

That is always the “desired” situation but unfortunately that doesn’t happen. When your dofollow blog becomes more and more popular, you’ll be targeted by more and more spammers. That has always been the trend. In fact, some people intentionally open up dofollow before their blogs become popular, and turn it off after.

Wordpress makes it so easy that I can even do it. I just browsed the plugins for do follow, hit install and that was it. Wordpress is awesome for someone like me that doesn’t know much about coding. Now, hopefully I will not get many spammers on my blog. I have comments set to moderation though, so I will just mark them as spam in akismet and that should help others in the community before they can get to them.

I made one of my blogs DoFollow awhile back and it did increase my spam comments. I would constantly get one liners that I could tell were nothing but spammers looking for a quick link. I ended up removing it after awhile since it required far too much time to wee out all the spam comments from the quality ones.

But I do agree that it is a great way to share PageRank with the people that take the time to read your articles and leave some quality feedback.

I totally agree with making my blogs dofollow. I use the dofollow wordpress plugin from Semilogic. I also use the Bad Behavior plugin which really helps with spam.
